In our latest entry in the Create Your Own Vision series, where we interview the visionaries and creators in the communities which we operate in, we got in touch with Cami - founder of Swimwear brand 'Fenntessa'. Fenntessa is a sustainable, hand-made swimwear brand from British Columbia with a particular focus on body inclusivity. We asked Cami all about Fenntessa and it's inception, as well as for advice for other aspiring creators and visionaries out there. Checkout Fenntessa here.
- What inspired you to start Fenntessa, and is there a story behind the name?
From a very young age, I knew I wanted to pursue the arts. I originally studied painting (and still paint today), but fashion felt like the right fit—it blends creativity with functionality. The name Fenntessa was created by our dad and is a fusion of my and my sister’s middle names: Robyn’s is Fenner and mine is Tessa. So together, we became Fenntessa. Family means a lot to me, and every time I hear the name, I’m reminded of that connection.
- What were some of the first steps you took when building Fenntessa?
While living in Milan for two years to study and intern, I met an incredible woman from Lima, Peru, who was starting a fashion school with her family. I was offered a job teaching design there and ended up staying in Lima for two and a half years. That’s where I first started designing and manufacturing garments. The textile industry there was so vibrant—it totally captivated me. My first brand was actually called Crush, and it was entirely made in Peru. It wasn't profitable but it was a learning experience I’m deeply grateful for, because it led me to Fenntessa.
- How have you incorporated body inclusivity into your design philosophy?
Our design philosophy is simple: we aim to design comfortable swimwear and apparel that help women feel relaxed and at ease in their skin. We want women to feel good while looking good. We value healthy, active lifestyles and use models of various sizes and ethnicities to reflect real diversity.
- Is there a piece or collection that feels particularly meaningful to you?
The Cartagena ruched bottoms were one of our earliest designs, and when they arrived in Vancouver in 2012, they were pretty cheeky for the time! Now they’re everywhere, but back then they were bold and a bit racey—and they really helped define our brand’s identity.
- You have a strong connection with your small-batch manufacturers in Medellín. Why is that important to you?
I absolutely love our manufacturers in Medellín. They’re like family to me—we communicate daily. Our relationship isn’t transactional; it’s collaborative. We grow together, and we share values around ethics and sustainability. They use recycled fabrics and avoid plastic wherever possible. I’m deeply grateful for that partnership.
- How do you approach sustainability in your production process?
All of our prints are made on fabric derived from recycled bottles and printed using zero water waste. But what I’m most proud of is that we don’t individually wrap our products in plastic. That may seem small, but when I used to work in retail I saw how much unnecessary plastic was used, and I wanted to do things differently.
- How has Fenntessa evolved over the years?
Fenntessa has grown into a celebration of individuality and creative expression. We collaborate with artists to create unique, and interesting prints. Our silhouettes stay classic, but our prints give the brand a truly distinctive edge. Vancouver is known for functional brands like Lululemon, Arc'teryx, and Aritzia—but we’re proudly fashion-forward, and we’re doubling down on that identity. We strive to be the most fashionable sportswear brand on the map!
- Were there times you wanted to quit? What kept you going?
Absolutely. I’ve had many moments where I felt defeated and ready to give up. But what always pulls me through is creativity—it’s my driving force. On a deeper level, I believe in helping women feel comfortable in their bodies. There’s so much anxiety around wearing swimwear, and I’ve made it my mission to help women feel confident and at ease. Swimwear can be both fashion-forward and comfortable.
- What are three lessons you've learned that you’d share with aspiring designers or entrepreneurs?
- Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want. People are often more generous and supportive than you think.
- Surround yourself with people who uplift you and respect your boundaries. Protect your energy.
- Competition is healthy—it keeps you sharp—but don’t get caught up in comparisons. Stay true to your vision.
I’m a visual artist, so when I’m not designing collections, I’m painting. I also love sewing and cooking. But my biggest inspiration is travel—I have the soul of a backpacker. Exploring the world fills me up creatively and spiritually.
- You’ve built a loyal community around Fenntessa. What’s been key to that connection?
Customer service. That’s been everything. I’ve made real friendships with some of our customers. When I shifted my mindset from “selling swimsuits” to “helping women feel confident,” everything changed. I want to help people find the suit that makes them feel amazing. My colleague Verena now leads customer service, and she shares that same commitment. I’m so grateful for her heart and care.
- What does confidence mean to you?
Confidence is being fully, unapologetically yourself. It’s about authenticity, not perfection. When you can express yourself openly and truthfully, that’s real confidence.
- What’s next for Fenntessa? Any exciting plans?
We’re expanding into beachwear! Pants, cover-ups, and sarongs are launching in a couple of weeks—and I couldn’t be more excited. By next summer, we're hoping to introduce dresses, camisoles, and more apparel. Big things are on the horizon.
